It's not that it's easy to miss something you're not looking for...it's that when you are focused on something complicated (like distinguishing minute details of people in white shirts) you miss insignificant things.
When I'm driving, I'm usually paying as much attention not to hit cars/people/bicyclists, that I wouldn't notice people in white shirts throwing a ball...but I did miss seeing that BMW that totalled my bus, so maybe I should shut up...
I've been hit two separate times because people don't watch when they make a turn or pull over to park (plus countless other near hits because people don't look when pulling out). As long as they don't see a car, they think it's safe to go. So I don't think many people look for bikes.
And I just think it's funny that it's a dancing bear that moves through the frame.
