This isn't a list of bands I hate.
I've covered that before. This is a list (and just a list, so no dull paragraphs explaining why) of bands who I don't get why people love them. You'll find many, if not all, on lists of greatest bands/artists of all-time. I'll leave it up to you to explain why I'm wrong and should embrace your act of choice. In particular order:
Prince
Bob Marley
Steely Dan
Beastie Boys
The Eagles (OK... so this one is a band I hate)
Joni Mitchell
John Mellencamp
LCD Soundsystem
The Smiths/Morrissey
Weezer
Hmm... good call! Here are some of my thoughts:
ReplyDeletePrince: I love Prince, but it's because a friend of mine's band used to cover his songs in high school, so I have good memories of it. It's definitely not what I normally listen to, but I think people love him as a performer and because he oozes sex for whatever reason. People love sex and music, man.
Bob Marley: An excuse to get high. I enjoy "Redemption Song." That's all I got.
Beastie Boys: Again, nostalgia and relatability. My brother and my cousin listened to them in middle school, so of course I did too. Also, I have a phenomenal t-shirt of them as cartoons in a sardine can, which I wear almost nightly. It's more than a decade old. I think people like them because they easily could have known them growing up, and they talk about stuff average people know about. You know parties, brass monkeys, coffee, and cream.
The Eagles: Yeah, don't get it.
Joni Mitchell: I'm a sucker for singer/songwriters, and I can just relate to her lyrics. "River" gets me every time.
John Mellencamp: He's from a small town, Nate. People LOVE other people from small towns who sing about all things American. People also love Toby Keith. People are idiots. I do like Mellencamp alright, though.
LCD Soundsystem: I don't get this one, either. They put on a good live show, but I couldn't get into it.
I added The Smiths/Morrissey. Can't believe I forgot them as they were in the first three in my mind when I thought of this topic. Also added Weezer.
ReplyDeleteBecky -- I listened to Purple Rain for the first time ever a few months ago and I can't think of an album that sounds as dated as that one. It legitimately made my ears weep.
As far as singer/songwriters... I like them, too. Just not Joni Mitchell. Her voice grates on me and I'm not much of a fan of the music, either.
I feel challenged to make you a mix tape!
ReplyDeleteIrena -- Go for it!
